CHAPS payments for businesses

What are CHAPS Payments?

CHAPS (Clearing House Automated Payment System) provides a guaranteed same-day service for bank-to-bank GBP payments. It’s mainly used for high-value bank-to-bank and business-to-business payments, although individuals may also send CHAPS payments to buy or sell a high-value item, such as a house or car.

Payments can only be made in GBP, on a UK business day, to another bank that accepts CHAPS payments.

Features and benefits of CHAPS

  • Same-day GBP payment settlement for high-value transactions (payment processing cut-off times apply).
  • No upper limit on the payment amount that can be transferred for individual customers. If you use Corporate Online Banking, this will be restricted to your set payment amount.
  • You can make payments using online banking, the app or via your branch. You can also ask our Customer Connect team for help when using our digital banking services.

How to make a CHAPS payment



Log in to online banking and follow the prompts from the 'Payments and transfers' menu.
