Built for everyday spending and beyond

Secure and convenient ways to make purchases and withdraw cash, in the UK or abroad.

Our Debit Card gives you direct access to the money in your current account, and our Charge Card gives you up to 45 days’ interest-free credit, with the balance paid in full each month.

Security as a priority

We take security seriously and use a range of anti-fraud measures.

If you can't find your Debit Card or Charge Card, but don't think it's lost or stolen, you can freeze it. If it turns up, you can then easily unfreeze it.

Read more about our guidelines to help you prevent fraud on your account.

If you think your card has been lost or stolen, report it to us immediately by calling your branch 9am to 5pm, or at any other time call Customer Connect on 0800 870 8000.

Card protection for purchases

If there’s a problem with something you've bought with your Handelsbanken cards, speak to the retailer first.

In most cases this is the quickest way to get your money back.

However, if that doesn't work, ask us to help. We may be able to use the Mastercard chargeback service to get your money back, if:

  • You don't receive the goods or services you've paid for (including when the retailer has gone out of business)
  • The goods you receive are faulty, counterfeit or defective
  • You're charged the wrong amount
  • You're charged for a subscription you've already cancelled
  • You haven’t got a refund you’re expecting
  • Your account shows a cash machine withdrawal, but you haven’t got all (or any) of the cash.

We usually need to make a claim within 120 days of the transaction, or when the goods or services were meant to arrive, although this can vary.

We may need supporting evidence for your claim, such as proof of purchase and evidence of what's wrong, so have that ready. Mastercard have the final decision about whether a claim will be paid.

Chargeback is different from protection you get for credit card transactions under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act (where you can claim against the card provider as well as the retailer). This is because that protection doesn't apply to debit or charge cards.

FAQs

  • What is a Charge Card?

A Charge Card allows you to make purchases up to an agreed credit limit and repay the balance in full each month. No interest is charged, which can provide up to 45 days’ interest‑free credit.

  • How does a charge card differ to a credit card?

Both charge cards and credit cards allow you to spend up to an agreed credit limit. Charge cards must be repaid in full each month, meaning you don’t pay interest. Credit cards let you carry a balance across several months, although interest may be charged. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act provides additional protection, where you can claim against the card provider as well as the retailer. This protection applies to credit cards – not charge cards.

  • How does a charge card differ from a debit card?

A debit card takes payments directly from your current account balance. A charge card allows you to borrow money up to an agreed credit limit which is then repaid in full each month, offering a different way to manage spending.

  • How can I manage my cards?

You can view your cards and transactions, manage card settings and activate cards using Individual Online Banking or the Individual Banking app. You can also freeze your cards, view your PIN and add cards to Apple Pay in the app.

  • How do I activate my cards?

You can activate new cards via Individual Online Banking or the Individual Banking app.

You can also activate new cards by calling your branch or Customer Connect.

  • How do I apply for a Debit Card?

You can apply for a Debit Card when opening a Handelsbanken Current Account, or apply later using a standalone application form.

  • How do I apply for a Charge Card?

To apply for a Charge Card, you must already have a Handelsbanken Current Account. The Charge Card has a separate application process.

Please speak to your branch if you would like a Charge Card.

  • What's the maximum contactless card limit?
Spend up to £100 with just a tap.
  • Can you use a Charge Card at an ATM in the UK? Is there a fee?

You can use your card to withdraw cash anywhere in the world you see the Mastercard or LINK logos.

Handelsbanken won’t charge you a fee for using an ATM in the UK. If you’re abroad, we’ll charge 2.75% of the sterling amount for any non-sterling transactions.

Always check the screen when using an ATM as the operator may charge you.

  • Can I use my cards abroad?

Yes, you can use both Debit and Charge Cards internationally. When you’re abroad, we’ll charge 2.75% of the sterling amount for any non-sterling transactions made with your Debit or Charge Card.

You can manage overseas card usage settings through online or mobile banking.

  • Can I stop my cards being used online, by telephone or abroad until I need to?

You can switch your card off so it can’t be used either abroad, or online and by telephone, then switch it on again when you need to. You can manage these settings through your Individual Online Banking or the Individual Banking app. It will always be available to use in person in the UK.
