Direct Debits and standing orders allow you to make automated regular payments directly from your current account. Whether you have recurring bills, memberships or subscriptions, setting up a Direct Debit or standing order lets you stay on top of your regular payments.

The simplest and easiest way to make and manage your Direct Debits and standing orders is by using online banking.

What’s the difference between Direct Debits and standing orders?

A Direct Debit is a regular automatic payment from your current account. You don’t set it up yourself – you authorise a company to do it for you (such as your mobile phone or broadband provider). Once set up, it allows that company to take an agreed amount of money from your account at set times. Direct Debits are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee Opens in a new window and a company must tell you before they change your Direct Debit payment.

A standing order is a regular automatic payment of a fixed amount. You set this up yourself, to be paid out of your current account on a specific day. They can be used for such regular payments as paying rent, transferring money between accounts, or covering mortgage repayments. You can cancel or amend standing orders at any time.

Log in to online banking and follow the prompts from the ‘Payments and transfers’ menu.

To set up a standing order as a regular payment, we’ll need to know your payee’s:

  • Sort code
  • Account number
  • Account name
