Be cautious

Be careful if something seems too good to be true, especially if you can’t pay securely. If you’re worried about something you’ve bought, tell your branch or Customer Connect.

Fraud vs scams vs disputes

Fraud happens when a criminal gets access to your accounts under false pretences.

A scam is when someone tricks you into revealing sensitive information that gives them access to your money, or into making payments to someone else.

A dispute starts out as a legitimate card transaction, but at some point something goes wrong and you want to challenge the payment. This could be because the vendor doesn’t agree with your version of events and won’t give you a refund or exchange. Disputes usually arise when something isn’t as described or is damaged.

If you’re having an issue with a dispute with something you’ve bought on your Handelsbanken card, speak to your branch.

Shopping online

Online shopping is not always what it seems, even if an item appears legitimate on your search engine. Criminals can promote fake offers and false links.

Look out for sellers asking you to pay them directly for goods rather than through the platform’s payment channel (like Facebook Marketplace or eBay). You have less protection if anything goes wrong, and this is a potential sign of a scammer at work.

Keep track of your account activity with transaction alerts

Getting alerts direct to your mobile helps you to keep a step ahead of fraudsters.

We can tell you in real time about card payments, payments to new beneficiaries, standing orders and Direct Debits. Any suspicious activity can be picked up and dealt with sooner.

To get these, enable push notifications both in the Individual Banking app and on your mobile (iOS or Android).

Follow these simple guidelines to help prevent fraudulent activity on your accounts.

Remember to report any lost or stolen cards immediately.

Protect your PIN

  • Don’t tell anyone your PIN, including us or the police, or write it down.
  • Always cover your hand when entering your PIN into any keypad.

Safe online shopping

  • Always use a secure website for any online payments - one which has https: (instead of http:) at the start of the web address, or a padlock.
  • Never give your card or bank details over the phone.
  • Make sure that we have your up-to-date mobile number, or the app, so we can send you Verification Codes when you’re shopping online.
